After our Denali Park adventure, we drove back South to Talkeetna.
We passed Igloo City along our way. I had to get a picture...since I didn't on the way up.
| I think it's hideous...and cool...all at the same time! |
Anyway, once we got to Talkeetna we made our way to our "hotel". We had a reservation at Meandering Moose Lodging. We got in late (although you can't tell that by the pictures...since it's always light..) and this is what we found when we drove up.
And this is where we turned off the road to get to our cabin:
And this is the Cozy Moose cabin (it's a dry cabin, so no running water/plumbing...but there was a bath house with running water not too far away)

It was the coolest "hotel room" ever! Luke and I already want to go back and stay here again sometime!
We went to the Roadhouse for our 4th of July breakfast. Luke and I shared a meal, which was good because it was a lot of food! We also got a cinnamon roll to share, which was so delicious!!!
| Deliciousness! |
Then we walked around the town (it's not very big, so you can walk around the town pretty quickly!)
| Down by the Susitna River |
We went to the Talkeetna Ranger Station, where the Denali climbers check in.
| This map represents all the home countries of the climbers who have attempted to climb Denali this season. |
After leaving the Ranger station, we wandered around some more.
Eventually it was time for the 4th of July parade to start. We picked out a spot in front of the ice cream place to watch the parade...and of course we got ice cream too! (It was delicious!)
Here comes the parade!
| The Talkeetna Red Hat Society |
| random people in a car... |
| Moose on parade auction float |
| Human hamster on the electric company float |
| Eventually the parade came back by...like it does in all small towns :) I'm used to that! |
| Luke even got to be in the parade. This car stalled right in front of us, so Luke helped push it to the post office. |
| Alaskan snow plow |
| Talkeetna River guides |
| One of the many fire trucks in the parade |
| If there was an award for "most random", I would give it to this guy! |
It was so weird that there weren't any horses in the parade. (In fact, I think that's the first time I've ever seen a parade without horses! And the 4th of July isn't the same without going to a rodeo...don't get me started on that though...sad!)
We decided to leave after the parade, but we made stops along the Talkeetna Spur road.
First we went to an art gallery. The guy that owns the gallery is really nice, and very talented!
And then we went to the Talkeetna Lodge, so Luke's parents could see the Denali viewing deck. We even got a few glimpses of the very tip top of it!
| Silly clouds! |
| Boyd and Thais are waiting for another glimpse of the huge mountain! |
I found some pretty flowers while we were waiting.
| Look! Red, white and blue! So patriotic! |
Next stop was Fish Lake. It's such a picturesque spot, with a lake and floatplanes and such...we wanted to stop by and see it.
And finally we stopped at the Birch Syrup store. Luke and I bought some birch syrup and caramels to try. And we even got to see the machine that processes the syrup. Very cool!
| How they collect the syrup |
| The syrup processor thing... |
| The store |
And after that we continued on our way back...until we got to Wasilla. Then we took the Palmer-Wasilla highway over to Palmer so we could visit the Musk ox farm. I had purchased a groupon to use while Luke's parents were here...and it was time to use it!lkjd
| On the tour |
| The yearlings were tired... |
| Finally a musk ox came to the fence. Thais got to feed it! Yay! |
| One of the bulls...not very social... |
It's such a picturesque place! (Along with the rest of Alaska! haha!)
And after our stop at the Musk ox farm, we went home to Eagle River. It was another wonderful day in Alaska!
Happy 4th of July! God Bless the U.S.A.!
