Time Out Report

The theme for this year's Time Out for Women was :
"Seek the Good"

And the scripture reference was in Colossians 3:23
"And whatsoever ye do, do it HEARTILY..."

This was the 10th anniversary of Time Out for Women, and it was the 6th one my sister Wendi and I have attended.  (The second one for my mom and Kara, and it was Cassie and Laura's first TOFW.)

We had a lot of fun!

This years presenters were:

T.C. Christensen (the director from the movie 17 Miracles)
James Farrell
Chris Williams
Sara Wells and Kate Jones (from the blog Our Best Bites)
D. Kelly Ogden
Julie Hanks
Emily Watts

T.C. Christensen-

He showed us some clips from the movie...like this one:

And then he talked about the clips he shared.

In this one (posted above), he talked about how Elizabeth got her miracle.  She prayed and then acted --she did something she thought would help her husband not recognize them...and it worked!

He talked about all sorts of pioneer stories.  And I loved it.  I had pioneer ancestors, and I am amazed by them and their stories.

James Farrell-

He talked about 3 things that keep us away from our Savior:
1.  Thinking that I don't have any problems
2.  Thinking I am better than others--that they need Atonement more than me
3.  Thinking I am worse than others--that the Savior can't help me

Chris Williams-

He talked about forgiveness and letting go...  Watch and you'll see why...

Sara and Kate-

They talked about the world of blogging/social media/pinterest and how they can make us feel inspired, and how they can make us feel inadequate.
(One of them even called pinterest: www.i didn't know how below average i was until now.com...  HAHA!)
They said to not compare yourself with anyone except the best version of yourself.

D. Kelly Ogden-

He talked about:
"Summum Bonum" -- "The Highest Good".

He gave examples from the scriptures: Enoch, Melchezidek, Alma, Daniel, Paul, Joseph Smith, and the Savior.

He even taught us how to sing "I Am A Child of God" in Hebrew.  I wrote down the words:

Ani Bat Elohim
V' Hu Shalakh Oti
V' Natan Li Horim Tovim
I' Tapel B' Nafshi

[chorus]
Azru Na Li La'asot
K' Fi Toratav
Tadrikhuni Likhiot
K' Day Lashuv Elav.

(Don't ask me how to pronounce any of it, though...)

Julie De Azevedo Hanks-

She is a therapist (as well as a singer/songwriter) and she talked about preventing emotional burnout.

She gave 3 myths that we believe for some reason.  They are:

1. We are supposed to be happy all of the time
This isn't true.  There are 4 basic emotions: happy, sad, mad, scared.  She said that Christ felt all of those emotions, but he used them for good.  And so our challenge was to identify what we were feeling so that we could also use it for good.

2.  Taking care of self is selfish
She pointed out that giving up self takes an investment in self the first place...you need to actually have something to give up.  She said we are not asked to give up our identity...we are asked to give up our carnal self.

She shared a quote that I really liked.  It goes like this:

"If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life you ought to be living is the one you are living." --Joseph Cambell

3.  If I acknowledge my strengths, I am prideful
She said it's the ultimate humility to acknowledge God's gifts in us.  We can own our strengths!
She challenged us to write down 10 weaknesses, and then to write down 10 strengths.  From that exercise do we notice a time difference?  10 weakness are a lot easier to find than 10 strengths.

And Julie also said to not make to-do lists...make TA-DA lists--where you celebrate what you actually did!

Emily Watts-

She said the more we know about good, the better we'll be at seeking it.

She gave us some hints and questions to ask ourselves:

1. Sometimes good needs a catalyst (like ingredients for toffee...not only do the need mixed, they need heat...)
Ask:  What can I do to be a catalyst for good?

2.  Good does not always reside in your comfort zone.
Ask:  How can I reach outside of my comfort zone?

3.  Good often appears in disguise.
Ask:  What good might be hidden in this trial?

4.  Good takes patience.
Ask:  How can I increase my trust in the Lord?

5.  Good is primarily other-centered.
Ask:  How can I bless someone's life with good today?

And another question she asked was:
If this all were a game-what would be learned by watching me?

(And that made me think of The Hunger Games...and how the movie is coming out soon.  So exciting!)

Well that's all I've got...for now anyway.

Happy Friday!
