Luke and I went to see the ceremonial start of the Iditarod* today... We didn't see the actual start of it, we just went to a park along the route to watch the teams run by.
*What is iditarod? Go here and see for yourself! (You can even see the gps tracker of the race.)
The place we chose for our viewing destination was Goose Lake Park near the campus of the University of Alaska Anchorage. (Our initial plan was to go downtown to watch, but due to a late start and road conditions/accidents on the highway* and not wanting to deal with big crowds we went with our plan B.)
*when I say 'the highway' I mean it. There's only one.
We expected the teams to run by really fast but they didn't. We were by a pretty tight turn in the trail, and from what we were hearing from other spectators there had been some accidents there in the years past... But we didn't see anything exciting like that. Not that accidents are exciting...but...they kind of are. (Think Nascar.)
It was really cool to see the teams. The dogs are amazing! (They don't look like what you think they would look like. They don't look like traditional Huskys. I thought they would look like the dogs in the Disney movie Snow Dogs...but they totally don't look like those dogs...)
(What do you mean that Disney movies aren't real??)
The official start of the Iditarod is tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Willow, AK (that's somewhere between Wasilla and Talkeetna) and they go all the way to Nome, AK.
Here are some pictures from today.
I also took some video on my phone. I will post that (or at least try to post it) when I actually get it on my computer. And hopefully I can get it to work this time..
