Fresh Creamery Butter

Luke asked me the other day how to make homemade butter.

I said "I don't know...you need cream and a butter churn I guess...other than that I have no idea".

Then I remembered something else:  "we need a horse and a bucket of milk!  My grandma told me a story once that they were going camping and they took a little bucket of milk with them.  She said the trail was so rough and rocky that when they got to where they were going to camp there was little chunks of butter in the milk."

But alas...we don't have a horse or a milk bucket.

So Luke turned to Google to find the answer.

It turns out you do need cream...and salt...and a mixer.  Oh.  And time.

And it would be nice to have something delicious to put butter on...like rolls or something...we didn't until today.  We made rolls and muffins.  (Diet?  What diet??)

After the cream and salt have been mixing for awhile (with 1-2 breaks while the motor cooled off) the cream separates.  Drain off the liquid, then give the butter a cold bath, and put it in a jar.  That's what we did!

Fresh Creamery Butter.  Delicious!

(Oh..and if you have seen the movie Kate and Leopold, you will know how to say "Fresh Creamery Butter" correctly...)

  1. Mom used to make butter when I was little and I do believe it did take a long time! I remember Grandma telling us that story =) I can hear her voice in my head and that makes me happy! Hope your butter was delicious!

  2. Oh! I forgot to mention that she strained the cream from the milk in a bucket. I have vague memories of that. At least you didn't have to get the cream that way =)
